Top 10 Most Unsafe Toys of 2014
World Against Toys Causing Harm, or W.A.T.C.H., has just issued its "10 Worst Toys" list. By familiarizing ourselves with this list we start to learn types of things to look out for.
Organizers have been compiling this list for over 40 years. They say the toys singled out this year are representative of some of the typical problems they come across, and that the list does not include all potentially dangerous products on the market.
Surprisingly, many of the same hazards with the potential to seriously harm or kill children listed over the last four decades can still be found in newly designed toys. The CPSC reported that in 2012 alone, there were eleven (11) toy-related deaths of children under 15 years old, and an estimated two hundred sixty five thousand (265,000) toy-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms. While there were 47 toy-related deaths of children within the three-year period between 2010 and 2012, even one injury to one child is too many, particularly when the risk is known and preventable.
The top ten toys to avoid in 2014 are:
Toy 1 - AIR STORM FIRETEK BOW (Zing)
Toy 2 - RADIO FLYER ZIGGLE (Radio Flyer, Inc.)
Toy 3 - CATAPENCIL (Toysmith)
Toy 4 - ALPHABET ZOO ROCK / STACK PULL TOY (Skip Hop)
Toy 5 - SWAT ELECTRIC MACHINE GUN (Junxing Toys) [Actual company name]
Toy 6 - WOODEN INSTRUMENTS (WalMart)
Toy 7 - BOTTLE ROCKET PARTY (Norman and Globus)
Toy 8 - LiL’ CUTESIES – BEST FRIENDS (JC Toys Group)
Toy 9 - TRUE LEGENDS ORCS BATTLE HAMMER (Toys R Us)
Toy 10 - COLORED HEDGEHOG (Toys R Us)
In the twelve months since W.A.T.C.H.’s last “10 Worst Toys” conference, there have been at least seventeen (17) toy recalls representing over four million eight hundred thousand (4,800,000) units of dangerous toys in the United States and Canada.
"It's not so much about the specific toys. It's about the hazards," James Swartz, W.A.T.C.H. director, said at a news conference at the Franciscan Hospital for Children.
Toy guns, bottle rockets and bows and arrows, on the list this year, may seem exciting and intriguing to children, but have the real potential to lead to tragic, sometimes deadly, consequences, said the group in a statement.
We should all take a moment to familiarize ourselves with the items on the above list. Again, by doing so we start to learn specific things as well as types of things to look out for.
